WHEN THE RELATIONSHIP NEEDS MORE THAN ANOTHER CONVERSATION
Almost nobody arrives here because they stopped caring.
They arrive because the ways they've tried to reach each other have stopped working, and both of them know it.
Sometimes there's a rupture with a date attached — an affair, a financial secret, a hidden decision, a discovery that changed the ground under you. Sometimes nothing happened at all. The relationship just got crowded out by careers, children, aging parents, and years of putting the partnership last in line, and one day you noticed you were running a household with someone you no longer talk to.
What it looks like from inside varies. The same argument on a loop. Politeness where there used to be warmth. One person carrying the emotional weight and quietly furious about it. Two people who are unfailingly civil and entirely alone.
Couples therapy is a structured, confidential place to name the pattern, say the thing that's become unsayable, and find out what actually has to change.
WHERE MOST COUPLES START
Any one of these is enough to book a consultation.
You may recognize:
The same conflict returning in different clothes, never resolving
A relationship that functions well and feels like nothing
One of you feeling criticized, dismissed, lonely, or permanently in the wrong
Trust broken by an affair, a secret, a financial decision, or substance use
Careers, parenting, money, illness, or caregiving taking everything the relationship needed
Wondering whether this is worth continuing, and not wanting to say so out loud
You don't need to agree on the problem. You don't need to agree that therapy is the answer. You need one of you willing to start, and both of you willing to be honest once you're in the room.
HOW I WORK
Gottman Level 3, Emotionally Focused, and Psychodynamic
Communication skills are the last thing most couples need.
You already know how to communicate. You do it all day, with people far more difficult than each other. What's happening at home isn't a skills gap.
Underneath the argument is usually something older: accumulated resentment nobody itemized, two different ideas of what was promised, a betrayal that was absorbed rather than resolved, or two people defending themselves so effectively that neither can get close.
My approach is active, structured, and direct. I pay attention to what you're arguing about, and more attention to what happens between you while you argue — what each of you is protecting, what reliably gets lost in translation, and the moment the conversation turns.
I'm trained in the Gottman Method at Level 3, in Emotionally Focused Therapy, in discernment counseling, and in financial therapy. The method matters and it isn't the point. The point is understanding this particular relationship well enough to know what will work in it.
I won't immediately referee or decide who's right. I'll slow down what happens between you, name the pattern while it's running, and hold both of you accountable for your half of it.
The aim isn't a relationship without conflict. It's a relationship that can carry what life puts on it.
THE PRESSURES THAT TEST EVEN STRONG RELATIONSHIPS
Couples don't arrive short on love, intelligence, or commitment. They arrive because life got more complicated than the strategies they were managing it with.
01 · Identity
Ambition, relocation, parenthood, midlife, retirement, a career that took over. Both of you have changed, and the question is whether you changed towards or away.
02 · Trust & Connection
Emotional distance, recurring conflict, resentment, intimacy, betrayal — or the slow drift that can happen when a relationship becomes mostly logistics.
03 · Attention & Pressure
ADHD, executive-function differences, emotional reactivity, mismatched pacing, sensory overload, and the relational consequences of different nervous systems.
04 · Pressure
Careers, children, caregiving, financial responsibility, family obligation, and the cumulative cost of carrying too much for too long.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THE ROOM
Three things that can make couples work more challenging.
MONEY
Wealth is rarely just money
Money can represent security, freedom, competence, fairness, power, loyalty, status, generosity, control, or fear. For couples with significant income or assets, money does not necessarily become simpler. Sometimes it becomes more complicated.
With training in financial therapy, I help couples explore differences around spending and saving, earning and inheritance, financial secrecy, family obligations, prenups, lifestyle expectations, and the emotional meanings beneath money so you can make decisions with greater understanding and less conflict.
CONTEXT
When the problem isn't only between the two of you
A relationship does not exist in isolation. For many couples I work with, the strain between them is intertwined with the life around them: demanding careers, parenting, blended families, aging parents, family businesses, wealth or financial differences, extended-family expectations, health concerns, relocation, or major decisions about what comes next.
repair
When trust has been broken
The first question after a betrayal usually isn't how to forgive. It's what actually happened, whether it's still happening, and whether both people are willing to do the work repair requires.
An affair. An emotional affair. A financial secret. Hidden substance use. A decision made unilaterally that should have been made together. The path through is different for every couple, and it starts with establishing the facts.
DISCERNMENT COUNSELING
One of you is closer to leaving than the other. Say so.
Couples therapy assumes two people are trying to improve the relationship. That assumption is wrong more often than the field admits, and when it's wrong, ordinary couples therapy makes everything worse — the leaning-out partner sits through sessions they've privately finished with, and the leaning-in partner works harder at something that isn't being worked on.
Discernment counseling is built for exactly that asymmetry. It is short — usually one to five sessions — and its goal is not to save the marriage. Its goal is for both of you to understand, with far more clarity than you have now, how the relationship arrived here and what each of you contributed to it.
You end with one of three decisions: continue as you are, separate, or commit to a defined period of couples therapy with divorce off the table while you do it. No one is talked into any of them.
If you're the one who hasn't said out loud that you're considering leaving, this is the format designed for that conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Counseling & Marriage Counseling
What Couples ask me first.
-
Yes, within the limits of Florida law and professional ethics. Because the couple is the client, confidentiality works differently here than in individual therapy, and I review exactly how individual conversations are handled before we begin. If you have specific concerns tied to your profession, public visibility, business, or family circumstances, we can discuss them privately before you book anything.
-
An assessment: time with both of you together, then a session with each of you alone. I want each person's history, version, and goals before I propose a plan. You'll have a clear picture of what I think is happening, and what I'd suggest doing about it, by the end of that process.
-
Weekly at the start — there has to be enough continuity to change a pattern. Frequency drops as the work holds. A specific recent problem may need a focused stretch; longstanding conflict or betrayal takes longer. I don't believe in therapy that continues because it started, and I'll say so if I think we're done.
-
Common, and not disqualifying. You don't need equal enthusiasm or agreement about what's wrong. If one of you is genuinely considering ending the relationship, discernment counseling is the better format, and I'll say so rather than letting us spend months in the wrong one.
-
I'm a Level 3 Gottman therapist and EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) trained, with a psychodynamic clinical foundation — meaning I don't just teach communication skills, I work to understand what's actually driving the pattern underneath them. I'm also a Certified Seven Principles Leader, with additional training in neuropsychotherapy and financial social work. That combination lets me move fluidly between structured, research-backed interventions and the deeper individual and relational history that's usually running the show.

Couples counseling and marriage counseling both help partners understand relationship patterns, improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen their connection. Marriage counseling specifically refers to counseling for married couples, while couples counseling can help married and unmarried partners. At Reclaim Mental Wellness, therapy is tailored to the relationship rather than relying on a one size fits all approach.

Couples do not need to wait until their relationship is in crisis to begin marriage counseling. Counseling may be helpful when the same arguments continue without resolution, communication has become difficult, emotional or physical intimacy has changed, trust has been damaged, financial issues are creating tension, or one or both partners feel disconnected from the relationship.
-
Couples counseling can provide a structured environment for addressing an affair, emotional betrayal, financial secrecy, or another significant breach of trust. Therapy can help couples understand what happened, address the impact of the betrayal, improve communication, and determine what rebuilding trust would require.
-
Yes. Marriage counseling can help couples understand the patterns underneath recurring communication problems. The goal is not simply to learn better phrases or communication techniques, but to identify what causes conversations to become defensive, critical, withdrawn, or unproductive and develop healthier ways of responding to each other.
-
Yes. Financial disagreements often involve more than dollars and budgets. Money can represent security, independence, fairness, control, responsibility, status, or fear. Julia's background in financial therapy allows couples to explore both the practical and emotional factors contributing to financial conflict.
-
It is common for one partner to be more motivated to begin counseling than the other. Couples do not have to agree about the cause of their problems before starting therapy. If one partner is seriously considering ending the relationship while the other wants to preserve it, discernment counseling may be a more appropriate starting point.
-
The length of couples counseling depends on the issues being addressed, how long the patterns have been present, and the couple's goals. A focused recent concern may require a shorter period of therapy, while longstanding conflict, betrayal, or complex relationship patterns may require more time. Sessions may begin more frequently and decrease as progress becomes established.
